On this Women’s Day, like every year, political leaders took time out to applaud women, make new promises for their safety, empowerment, while many continue to suffer abuse and violence

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union ministers and leaders of political parties conveyed their wishes on Monday on the occasion of International Women's Day, extolling the role of ‘nari shakti' in various fields.

"...greetings and best wishes to all fellow citizens. Women in our country are setting new records and achievements in various fields. Let us collectively resolve to promote gender justice and eliminate inequality between women and men," Kovind tweeted.

PM Modi shops to celebrate
Modi shopped to celebrate women's "enterprise, creativity and India's culture". Using #narishakti, the PM listed out the products he purchased - embroidered shawl made by artisans of the Toda tribe of Tamil Nadu, a handcrafted Gond Paper Painting, a traditional Naga shawl, khadi cotton Madhubani painted stole, jute file folder from West Bengal and Gamusa made by various self-help groups of Kakatipapung Development Block.

"I am eagerly awaiting to receive Classic Palm Craft Nilavilakku made by women based in Kerala. It is commendable how our Nari Shakti has preserved and popularised local crafts and products," he added.

In Madhya Pradesh, a woman MLA was handed over the reins of the House of the state Assembly on Monday. Congress MLA Jhuma Solanki presided over the Question Hour.

The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution, saluting the indomitable spirit of women in contributing to the progress of the nation.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured women for their contribution in various fields and inaugurated various schemes as part of ‘Mission Shakti' program launched last year for the security of women in the state.

He also launched the second phase of the ongoing Safe City project to provide an environment free of fear to women.

Amid all this, news about crimes against women kept pouring in from different regions of the country.

Pregnant woman ‘killed over dowry' in UP
A 30-year-old pregnant woman was found hanging at her home in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, and a case has been lodged against her in-laws for allegedly demanding dowry from her, police said on Monday.

Tabasum Begum, married to Afsar for over a year, was allegedly being harassed by her in-laws for not bringing enough dowry with her, they said.

Stopped from drinking, man beats wife to death
A man, on being stopped from drinking alcohol, beat up his wife with an iron rod, leading to her death in Jansath tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district, police said on Monday.

Kusum got seriously injured when Sanjiv brutally attacked her, and was admitted to a hospital but she succumbed to injuries on Sunday, police said. Sanjiv is absconding, they added.

2 boys ‘sexually assault' 6-year-old girl
A six-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by two minor boys in Warangal district of Telangana, police said on Monday. The incident happened on February 24 but a complaint was filed on March 6 by the girl's parents after their daughter complained of pain, the police said.

The boys were relatives of the girl and stay in her neighbourhood. They took her to an isolated place and allegedly assaulted her, the police said based on the complaint.

Cop rapes woman complainant for 3 days
A police sub-inspector (SI) was suspended on Monday on the charge of raping a 26-year-old woman in Rajasthan's Alwar district, an official said. The accused was arrested and suspended on Monday.

According to Jaipur Range Inspector General Hawasing Ghumaria, the woman had gone to file a complaint on March 1 regarding a matter involving dowry with the in-laws.

"The woman told us that the incidents took place on March 1, 2 and 3. There is room near the police booth where the inspector lives. The incident allegedly took place there," Ghumaria said.
