New Delhi: A 25-year-old biker was allegedly crushed to death by a Mercedes-Benz in east Delhi's Preet Vihar area, police said today. The incident led to chaos in the area and agitated locals allegedly set a police motorbike on fire.
The deceased Monu, a resident of Mandawali, was passing through the road near a petrol pump in Preet Vihar on his motorbike. The Mercedes-Benz driver, identified as Raj Kumar (52), allegedly hit Monu's bike while reversing his car, hardly 50 metres away from his bungalow.
Kumar fled the scene after the incident, reported around 10.30 PM yesterday. He was tracked down today with the help of the temporary registration number of the vehicle, which a few locals had noted down, said DCP (East) Bhairon Singh Gurjar.
Kumar is the director of a Ghaziabad-based private finance company and he resides in east Delhi's Nirman Vihar area. When police started tracking the temporary registration number, it emerged that the white Mercedes-Benz was sold by a distributor in Noida.

It was sold off only a few months ago to the company where Kumar works, said the DCP Gurjar. "Later it also emerged that the temporary number had lapsed and Kumar was driving the vehicle without valid registration," The DGP added.
Yesterday, Kumar has fled the scene when a large crowd gathered in the area. Later, locals called up the police control room and when the cops reached the spot, some "miscreants" in the crowd started abusing them for alleged negligence and inaction.
In no time, the crowd turned into a mob and an unidentified person allegedly set a police motorbike on fire. However, no police officials were reported to be injured. The police team somehow managed to rush Monu to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Later, senior police officials had to visit the spot in order to bring the situation under control. Two FIRs were registered - one for rash driving and causing death by negligence in connection with the accident and another for the rioting and damaging of public property.
The police has also arrested a person, identified as Dharmender, under charges of rioting. "We are in the process of monitoring CCTV footage obtained from the spot. At least six more miscreants were present in the mob. More arrests are likely," said the DGP Gurjar.
