Metroman E Sreedharan almost did a Barrack Obama on Tuesday.
At the much-hyped press conference to make public the enquiry report of the Zamrudpur accident that had happened on July 12, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief almost ordered a pesky fly to "get out". But unlike the US President, the 77-year-old Metro head didn't implement capital punishment and kill the fly. He kept flaying the unwelcome guest throughout the one-hour conference.
However, even as he kept shooing away the fly, Sreedharan heard every question carefully.
Interestingly, the fly did not disturb Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal, who was also present at the meeting.
Mishap cause
Sreedharan said there were two major causes behind the Jamrudpur accident: design and material deficiencies. "The expert committee has found the cantilever design did not adequately take care of various forces. Also the concrete failed to meet the strength criterion by a wide margin," he said.
Action
Arch Consultancy Services, who supplied the detailed design to the contractor Gammon India, has been blacklisted from all DMRC projects for five years. Some DMRC officials have also bee punished.
Gammon India will be issued a show-cause notice.
Precaution
DMRC will have all designs checked by an independent agency before its own team looks at it.
Power fliesDuring an interview at the White House last month, US President Barrack Obama spotted a fly buzzing around him. When it persistently intruded on the conversation, Obama yelled, "Get out of here," to the fly. When it didn't obey, he killed it with his bare hands.
During the Budget session on June 23, Delhi Finance Minister AK Walia faced a similar situation when a fly kept troubling him. But later, it flew away.
