A day after Pune got its first woman police commissioner, Meera Chadha Borwankar, it also recorded another crime against a woman. Darshana Devidas Tongare, a trainee at IBM, died after she was allegedly assaulted with a sharp weapon by an unidentified person at Bavdhan on Friday night.

Bitter love possible cause
The police suspect the murder to be the result of a bitter love affair as the victim's cell phone, purse and other valuables were untouched. Important leads have also been received through messages and calls made to her cell phone, and a team has been sent to Chiplun in search of the suspect.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III), Dnyaneshwar Chavan, said, "Darshana had no problems with her family, friends or even at the workplace. It seems to be the result of a one-sided love affair."

Almost home
Tongare, 21, had been working as a trainee for over a month after graduating from the College of Engineering, Pune (COEP) in June this year. Her brother, Ketan, an MBA student, has lodged a complaint with the Hinjewadi police.u00a0

She was attacked on her way back home from her office in Yerawada. Her friend Abhijeet Namdev Taru (22) dropped her at the entrance of her residence in Suvarna Park near Shinde petrol pump in Bavdhan. A police officer said, "Darshana was stabbed above her stomach by an unidentified man who came from behind her. An injured Darshana called out to passerby Niranjan Vadde (24) and pointed to the assailant. Vadde chased the attacker on his bike but failed to nab him."

Statement recorded
Meanwhile, Tongare called up Taru on his cell phone and informed him about the attack. But by the time he could reach the spot, people around the area had taken her to a private hospital. She was later shifted to Sahyadri Hospital in Kothrud where she succumbed to injuries.
