Adapting novels into movies is something that the Bollywood filmmakers have been doing since long. And after the remarkable adaptation of Vikas Swarup's novel Q & A into an Oscar winning film, celebrated filmmakers like Rajkumar Hirani and Asutosh Gawarikar too have joined the league and are making film based on novels.
Thus, Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in association with Film Writers Association (FWA) have organised a seminar u2013 Cinema and literature: The question of adaptation u2013 on March 21 and 22. The speakers, which include some of the known names of Indian cinema, will speak on literature, drama, cinema and mythology. Also, the panelists will discuss on the dynamics of adaptation process, narrative structure, retaining the core premise of the story and various other aspects of making a movie out of a novel.
Atul Tiwari, who's a writer and director, said, "It's not easy to adapt literature into cinema as literature has its own distinctiveness. Hence, it requires a lot of skills." Tiwari, who is also one of the conveners at the seminar, added that while adapting a novel, one should make sure that it doesn't lose its essence.u00a0
Apart from the topic of discussion, the seminar will be a rare treat for film buffs and FTII students, as they'll get a chance to interact with the well-known directors and scriptwriters from the industry.
