Traffic police get richer by Rs 14 lakh in five days

Drivers, beware! You just can't get away with breaking traffic rule anymore, as the cops are leaving no stone unturned to ensure that norms are strictly followed.

The traffic police have booked 9,000 errant drivers for various offences in just 5 days. These include 2,954 cases for riding without a helmet, 1,982 for halting the vehicle on zebra crossing, 1,146 for parking vehicles at bus stops, and 1,231 for driving on the wrong side of the road.

Besides, several cases were registered for talking on the mobile phone while driving, riding triple seat, and parking vehicles in No Parking Zone.

"We started the drive on November 19, and in just five days, we booked 9,000 people for violating traffic rules," said DCP (traffic) Vishawas Pandhare.

He added that the traffic department collected Rs 14 lakh as fines in these five days. "It's really a serious issue, and there's an urgent need to create awareness about traffic rules among people," he said.

The DCP said they have even booked auto rickshaw for refusing fare. "We have fined 642 auto drivers for refusing the fare and charging exorbitant fare from the passengers. Besides, we have sent proposals to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to suspend licence of some the errant auto drivers."

If the proposal is accepted, their licence will be at least eight days. In case of habitual offenders, the suspension can be for as long as three months.u00a0
