These 13 cuts are the Censor Board's way of clipping 'Udta Punjab' wings

The makers of 'Udta Punjab' have to pay heed to the Central Board's diktat and make these 13 cuts for their eagerly-awaited Bollywood film to get a certificate and see the light of day


The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the Bombay High Court on Wednesday, that they had granted 'A' certificate to the drug-themed Bollywood movie 'Udta Punjab' after ordering some cuts.

Earlier, producer Anurag Kashyap had approached the Bombay High Court claiming that his film hadn't received any certification from CBFC despite the officials watching the movie on June 3.

The petition came up for hearing before a bench headed by Justice S C Dharmadhikari and Justice Dr Shalini Phansalkar Joshi on Wednesday. The CBFC counsel informed the bench that a certificate had been issued to the movie with 13 cuts.

Kashyap, through his counsel, then told the court that they will check the suggestions (cuts) given by CBFC and will respond with an amended plea by Thursday.

mid-day has in its possession the document which states the reasons for granting the film 'A' certificate. It states that the theme presentation, language, visuals of the film are not suitable for non-adults.

These are the 13 cuts as suggested by the CBFC. (The points are verbatim except few cuss words have been omitted)

1. Delete sign board of Punjab in the beginning.
2. Delete Punjab, Jalandhar, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Tarantaran, Jashanpura, Ambesar, Ludhiana, and Moga to be deleted from background and dialogues wherever it occurs/
3. Delete two words from song 1.
4. Delete offensive words from song 2.
5. Remove all all cuss words from the movie.
6. Delete the word 'election', 'MP', 'party', 'MLA', 'Punjab', 'Parliament'
7. From song no 3, delete the visuals of scratching/itching side portion of Sardar.
8. Delete the close-up shots of injecting the drugs wherever it appears.
9. Delete the shot of urinating by Tommy in front of the crowd.
10. Delete the line 'Jamin Banzar te Aulad Kanjar'.
11. Delete the name of the dog as 'Jackie Chain'
12. First disclaimer should be audio/video and to be changed as - 'The film focusses on the rising menace of drugs and war against drugs and is an attempt to show ill-effects of drugs on today's youth and the social fabric. We acknowledge the battle against drugs being fought by the government and the police. But this battle cannot be won unless the people of India unite against the menace.
13. Second disclaimer of fiction to be increased according to audio/video.

Note: Most of the spoken language of the film is Punjabi.

The producers had earlier moved the Bombay High Court seeking a copy of the order passed by Censor Board's Review Committee purportedly suggesting cuts in the movie and removal of reference to Punjab in it.

The bench is likely to hear the matter on cuts in Thursday.

The movie is slated for release on June 17.

The Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Diljit Dosanjh starrer movie that delves into how the youth in Punjab have succumbed to drugs has also unleashed political sparring prompting Kashyap to ask parties to stay away from the censorship row.
