In Andheri (west), 140 streetlight poles to come up to improve safety for women

After the Shakti Mills incident, the necessity to light up areas has come to the fore. Bharatiya Janata Party corporator and K (west) ward committee chairman Ameet Satam has submitted a proposal to put decorative lights in Andheri as a pilot project that will help to not only beautify the area but illuminate it too.

According to the proposal, 140 new light poles will be added inAndheri (west), and the cost will be incurred by the corporator's fund and also through ward committee funds. "The proposal is expected to be tabled in September and once it is passed, the lights will be put up," said Satam.

A private firm recently conducted a survey to ascertain whether there is a need of extra lights in Andheri (west). According to their findings, more lights are required, as the BMC norms, which states that a 30 ft road should have a streetlight pole every 25 metres, seem to be violated. The BMC will provide the electricity in co-ordination with the electricity-providing agency.

Meanwhile, civic officials are also planning to increase the street light poles in rest of the city, but plans are still at a primary stage. "All the areas in the city which are dark will be lit. The administration will do whatever is needed to curb untoward incidents," said a senior official, on condition of anonymity, adding that senior officials are considering Satam's proposal. "If the project is successful, it is likely that the entire city will get more lights."
