Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Wednesday started moving out people from unsafe residential buildings in the city.

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) today started moving out people from unsafe residential buildings in the city, which has seen a few building collapses in the recent past, with the most serious one being in April.

People from these buildings, which have been deemed "dangerous and unsafe" by the civic authorities, are being accommodated in the MMRDA-managed rented houses.

A TMC release said the new Municipal Commissioner, Aseem Gupta, has given utmost importance to the safety of those residing in "dangerous" structures.

Eighty-seven families from six buildings were moved out today, it said, adding the Commissioner has assured people would not be inconvenienced during the shifting process.

The work of pulling down "unsafe" buildings has started simultaneously. A total of 62 dangerous buildings have been identified and their residents would be vacated in a phased manner, the Corporation added.

Seventy-four people were killed and more than 60 injured when an illegal building caved in at Mumbra here on April 4.u00a0
