Sharad Pawar, a constable, accidentally shoots himself at IPL match

A police constable, Sharad Arjun Pawar, escorting RCB team was injured after his gun went off after accidentally falling down from his shoulder during the IPL match against Rajasthan Royals at Pune's Gahunje stadium on Wednesday


A police constable escorting Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team was injured after his carbine gun went off after accidentally falling down from his shoulder during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Pune's Gahunje stadium on Wednesday.

The injured constable has been identified as Sharad Arjun Pawar (28), from Shivajinagar. A case of negligence while handling a weapon has been filed at Talegaon-Dabhade police station attached to Pune rural police on Thursday.

Inspector Vasant Babar, Talegaon police station, said, "Pawar was given responsibility to escort the RCB team from hotel to the stadium and was given a carbine gun for the same purpose. Later, he was also asked to patrol the VVIP points including seven to 12 number gates. As the match had already begun, there was a loud noise near the escort gate. Pawar was found to be injured. He claimed that the sling which was attached to his gun broke due to which it fell down and the bullet brushed his right leg. He was immediately rushed to hospital and is now out of danger."

He added, "Pawar was attached to Pune city police's headquarter wing for escorting VIPs. A case of negligence while handling a weapon (304) under Indian Penal Code has been registered against him and an inquiry has also been set up for the same."
