Kanpur: Seven youngsters were swept away in the Ganga river in Kanpur on Wednesday when one of them slipped into the river while taking a selfie and the others tried to save him, police said.
Six bodies have been fished out of the river while a search was on to find the seventh body, an official told IANS, adding that one boy survived.
Kauhana station house officer J.P. Sharma informed that the boys were enjoying the rain that lashed the city on Wednesday, when one of them trying to take a selfie by standing on the edge of the barrage tripped and fell in the Ganga, which was in spate due to rains in the region.
The others in an attempt to save him jumped into the river but were themselves swept away. The sole survivor Arjun ran and informed a police outpost nearby after which rescue operations were mounted but it was too late by then.
The deceased have been identified as Shivam, Satyam, Sachin, Sandeep, Rohit, Golu and Masood.
