Novel: Schindler's List
Author: Thomas Keneally
This true story of a German, Oskar Schindler, who saved more than one thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust, remains one of the most astonishing and fascinating stories even to this day. In this Booker Prize-winning novel, Thomas Keneally writes a fictionalised biography of Oskar Schindler, a member of the Nazi party who risked his own life for four years, working privately to save Jews from death camps. A must read for those who would want to know more about the Nazi rule and the not-so well known Oskar.


Novel: Trainspotting
Author: Irvine Welsh
This is Scottish writer Irvine Welsh's first novel. It is written in the form of short chapters, narrated in first person by various residents of Leith, Edinburgh who are heroin addicts. The novel is set in the mid to late 1980s. The book explores the causes of drug abuse and what sustains it in its many forms. It talks about a group of Scottish youngsters who use heroin as their best route of escape from the chaos of their disorganised lifetyles and modern day existence. It also throws light on addiction, relapses and its grave effects on the mind. The novel has since achieved cult status. It is ironically funny.
Irvine Welsh made a cameo appearance as the drug dealer Mikey Forrester in the movie.

He doesn't remember who he is, but with the help of the doctor he finds some clues he doesn't like too much. He only knows certain things that his face has been altered by plastic surgery, he knows a lot about firearms and he carried a microfilm that contains the code to an account of 4 million dollars. The story takes off from there, and it is fast paced, entertaining and engrossing.u00a0

Novel: Alive

Alive is the true story of a rugby team that crashes in the Andes. On October 12, 1972, a Fairchild F-227 of the Uruguayan Airforce, chartered by the young rugby team with family and friends, set off from Montevideo. Of the 45 people on the plane at the time of the crash, 16 came down from the mountain about 70 days later. Alive remains a classic survival tale.
