The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will soon generate electricity from biogas at one of its several sewage treatment plants (STPs). With the capacity of the plants slowly being increased, PMC officials have started holding meetings and presentations with prominent electrical companies and tenders will be invited for the project soon.u00a0
The PMC has around six STPs in the city, and chances of the project being started at the Bhairoba STP are high. "About four to five companies have evinced interest in the project and technical requirements are being studied, as the amount of electricity to be generated has to be in proportion of the capacity of the plant. The findings will then be included in the tenders for the opening of the technical bids," said an official, requesting anonymity.
The decision was taken after a presentation was made to Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak by a few companies earlier this month. Pathak was interested in the project and immediately directed officials to study the proposals and draw up a plan. Kirloskar Pumps and GGE Genset Pvt. Ltd are some of the prominent companies interested in the project, MiD DAY has learnt.u00a0 The decision comes after the PMC has undertaken an overhaul of all its machinery at the various STPs and pumping stations to meet the rising flow of sewage water.
Old machinery is either quickly being removed or repaired, and there are also plans to increase the capacity of some of the STPs. The Naidu STP is one such plant, which has benefited from the overhaul.u00a0u00a0u00a0
