Excess use of water and Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) failure to pay for it has landed the civic body in deep trouble. On January 3, the state irrigation department issued a letter to PMC, reminding it of the '354.76-crore pending water dues, warning that action would be taken if the amount wasn't paid at the earliest. The letter also mentioned that dam repair work would not be carried out till the dues were cleared.

Excess use
As per the government's approval, the irrigation department is supposed to provide 11.50 TMC of water within the PMC limits, but last year the city used much more than the permissible amount and failed to pay for it. According to reports, while only 2.5 per cent of the population pays on time, 10 per cent of the commercial sector is yet to clear dues.

Speaking to mid-day, an official from the irrigation department said, "Two months back we had issued a similar letter to the civic body, after which they had planned to cut down on the consumption of water. But as the decision created a lot of chaos in the city, eventually, nothing happened. Hence, in the recent letter we have mentioned that dam repair work won't be carried out till PMC clears its dues."
