New Delhi: Only three of Odisha's 568 hospitals have fire safety clearance, the National Human Rights Commission said yesterday and issued a notice to the state government, over the fire at SUM Hospital and Medical College in Bhubaneswar, which has left 21 people dead so far.

The Commission has issued the notice to the Odisha government's Chief Secretary and sought a report in the matter within six weeks, including on the relief and rehabilitation efforts for the next of kin of the deceased and the injured, an NHRC official said.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday said stringent action will be taken against those responsible for the hospital fire tragedy. Patnaik's statement came on a day when Union Health Minister J P Nadda asked Odisha government to ensure that the guilty persons in the hospital fire case do not go "scot-free."
