Neerja Bhanot was born on 7 September 1964 in Chandigarh and raised in Mumbai. She was the daughter of a Mumbai-based journalist, Harish Bhanot and his wife Rama Bhanot. She had two brothers, Akhil and Aneesh Bhanot. Neerja Bhanot was the head purser for the airline Pan Am Flight 73 which was hijacked by terrorists on 5 September 1986 during a stopover in Karachi, Pakistan. She died while saving passengers on the flight. Netizens took to social media platform, Twitter to pay tribute to Neerja Bhanot on her death anniversary.

She became the youngest recipient of India's highest peacetime gallantry, the Ashok Chakra Award, as well as several other accolades from the government of Pakistan and the United States. Neerja Bhanot was shot while helping passengers escape through the emergency exits. Her life and heroism inspired the biopic Neerja which was released in 2016 and directed by Ram Madhvani.
