Two builders, Jamil Qureshi and Salim Shaikh, were arrested yesterday in connection with the illegal seven-storey building that collapsed at Shilphata in Mumbra on Thursday.
According to the police, former scrap dealers Qureshi and Shaikh had constructed the illegal seven-storey building in partnership with five others. The building had been constructed on forestland in just three months, without the requisite permissions and certificates.
Both the accused were absconding since the building collapse, which left 73 dead and 62 injured. A special team arrested Qureshi, while Shaikh was arrested by officials of Thane Crime Branch. "Qureshi was arrested from Siddharth Nagar, Uttar Pradesh," informed Arun Sonde, senior inspector, Mumbra police station. Shaikh, who was making an attempt to leave the city, was apprehended at the Thane railway station.

The police have booked them under a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.Meanwhile, on Friday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan announced the suspension of Deepak Chavan, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) in-charge of illegal constructions, and KP Naik, senior inspector Diaghar police station, for dereliction of duty.
