A con man duped several foreign tourists in Mumbai by pretending to be their friend then spiking their drink and then fleeing away with their valuables. He was arrested on Friday


A con man duped several foreign tourists in Mumbai by pretending to be their friend then spiking their drink and then fleeing away with their valuables. He was arrested on Friday.

The con man used to convince foreign tourists that he wanted to be their friend and then invite them to have the 'best cup of coffee in Mumbai' at nearby cafes. After the tourists have had spiked drinks, he would then loot them.

An Israel citizen Metan Shalom Juria, 35 was duped similarly when he came to Mumbai for business and left his hotel on May 25 to see the Gateway of India. The con man intorduced himself to Juria as Sonu and took him to a nearby restaurant and bought him coffee. Hours later, when Juria woke up, his wallet and passport missing.

Juria then approached the Marine Drive police, who registered a complaint against the man.

Police began investigating, using a sketch based on Juria's description. After a tip-off by the Marine Drive police, the Tardeo police arrested the con man whose real name was Ayyaz Ahmed Niyaz Ahmed Shaikh on Friday. He was remanded in the Marine Drive police custody till July 12.

There are more than eight cases of robbery have been registered against him.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Shaikh befriended older tourists in particular saying it was his duty to be a good host as they were India's guests. His catch phrase was 'Atithi Devo Bhava'.
