More than 93K cases of women's rights violation since 2012: Government

More than 93,000 cases related to violation of the rights of women were reported over the last four years in the country along with over 3,000 instances of infringement of the rights of children, Lok Sabha was informed


New Delhi: More than 93,000 cases related to violation of the rights of women were reported over the last four years in the country along with over 3,000 instances of infringement of the rights of children, Lok Sabha was informed on Friday.

As many as 93,416 and 3,369 cases respectively of the violation of women and child rights were reported in the last four years, Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi said in a written reply.

"The National Commission for Women has reported that they have registered 16,584, 22,422, 32,118 and 22,292 cases of violation of women's rights in 2012-12, 2013-14, 2014-15 and 2015-16 (till date)," she said.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) -- under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act, 2005 -- registered 1,083, 1,267, 860 and 159 complaints related to the violation of child rights over the said time period, she said.

NCPCR also registered 1,194 complaints of violation of Child Rights under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, in the last three years and the current year (2015-16), the minister said.

"Violations under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012" amount to infringement of child rights, she said.

Child rights violations are related to displacement, violence, trafficking, etc.," she added. Violation of women's rights includes domestic violence, outraging of the modesty of women, dowry harassment, property dispute, rape, etc., she said.
