The residents of the area will host a cultural event to motivate interaction amongst today’s 'asocial' generation
Come Sunday and festivity will be all around Matunga as the residents will host the third edition of âOne Matunga' festival, a cultural event held to socialize with otherwise busy people.
This year the free-entry event will have several new features such as adventure sports, a performance by Sri Ram Iyer, fitness training activity by Micky Mehta, board games, Indian games etc. It will be held near Ruia Junction around 7 am.
The residents of this area first came together a few years ago to organize a festival aimed at bringing people together and showcasing local talent. "Youngsters these days are deeply engrossed in mobile phone games, play stations, TV and have very little social connect with their area. We want them to come out and meet each other. We have also kept a selfie zone for them. They can also come discover their sporty side with adventure sports or explore pranic healing. Once they find their calling, they can continue with it," said Nikhil Desai, one of the organisers.
The traffic police, city police and BMC will set up stalls there and while civic officials will spread awareness about waste segregation, the police will tell people about precautions against crime in the city. There will also be a medical zone where visitors can opt for health checkup for diabetes, Hepatitis C, eye checkup etc.
"A lot of people have met and become friends at this event and. This wouldn't have been possible otherwise. Besides, people find out about a lot of activities here. In this day and age of technology when neighbours have become isolated, we are trying to keep Matunga united," said Achal Sarawal, another organizer.
