Allahabad: Fire broke out in the luggage van of a Mumbai-bound train while it was passing through a remote part of the district, a railway official said today.
No casualties, injuries or damage to belongings of any of the passengers or other railway personnel aboard the Saket Express, which caught fire around midnight, was reported, North Central Railway spokesman Amit Malaviya said.
He said the fire, the cause of which was yet to be ascertained, was noticed by passengers travelling in the coach meant for the physically handicapped, which was adjacent to the luggage van, and they promptly pulled the chain.
The guard of the train, thereafter, informed the Naini Railway station nearby and the Allahabad Junction some 40 kms away, following which fire brigade and other support staff was rushed to the spot, Malaviya said.
The flames were doused after nearly half an hour of fire-fighting, the spokesman said, adding the luggage van was, however, completely gutted in the fire and was detached before the train chugged off for its onward journey.
