The SC today granted bail to Lt. Colonel Shrikant Prasad Purohit in the 2008 Malegaon serial blast case. A bench of Justices RK Agrawal and AM Sapre said they are setting aside the Bombay high court order by which the bail was denied. The apex court said it has imposed certain conditions on Purohit, while granting bail.
Earlier on August 17, the apex court reserved its order on the bail plea of Lieutenant Colonel Purohit. Senior lawÂyer, Harish Salve, appearing for Purohit told the court that he did not want to be dischaÂrged from the case at present, but for the interest of juÂsÂtice, wanted an interim bail.
Seven people were killed in a bomb blast on September 29, 2008, at Malegaon.
Sachin Sawan,
Congress spokesperson
'It was expected. The BJP govt is making deliberate efforts to release the accused in such cases. In Purohit's case the prosecution has proof, but then you know what is happening in the present government'
Nawab Malik,
NCP spokesperson
'Detention without convictiÂon is wrong and cannot be justified, be it Purohit or any other accused. What worries us is the NIA's role'
Keshav Upadhye,
BJP spokesperson
'There was a game plan in the Congress regime to seek a certain class of voters. But the conspiracy failed because the allegations were baseless'
