Tripura Police has claimed Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is expanding its network in the region following the arrest of spy Munir Khan and his accomplices on Saturday.

Khan confessed that he was an ISI agent and that he belonged to Pakistan's Bahawalpur District.

Khan said he entered India through Bangladesh, and visited Guwahati and other cities of the northeast with the intention of broadening the ISI's network.

"It is a fact that ISI uses the northeast as corridor, and Munir Khan is one of the examples, who is arrested. He went to Guwahati to meet agents there to activate their activities," said Public Prosecutor Tapan Saha.

Security experts believe that the ISI is fomenting Islamic militancy in the area to separate the northeastern region from the rest of India.

"Besides supporting the northeast militants, they are also trying to foment some Islamic militancy in the region and some groups that surface in south Assam, and some parts of upper Assam with the direct patronage of ISI," said Manas Paul, a security expert.

"As far as the region is concerned, ISI has special design for this part of the country, particularly the intention to separate northeast from India," he added.
