In a shocking incident that highlights how unsafe it can be to travel in local trains, a 25-year-old man sustained gun shot injuries after an unidentified man fired two rounds at him in Nahur station at around 12 midnight on Saturday. The incident took place after a group of four men got into a spat with the victim, Tabrez Jethwa, who was travelling in the luggage compartment of the Ambernath-bound train.
Recalling the horrific incident, Jethwa, a Mumbra resident who works as a driver at a private company in Bandra and was heading home, said, "I was sitting on the floor of the compartment when four men boarded the train at Vikhroli station. I had never seen them before. One of them stood in front of me and kicked my foot a few times. When I told him to stop bothering me, we had an argument following which he even apologised to me."
He added that the four men were in an inebriated state and alighted the train at Nahur station. "They told me to sit down again but I refused and stood inside the compartment. Suddenly, one of them fired two shots at me," added Jethwa.
Despite sustaining injuries on his right forearm and below his right shoulder, he tried to chase the men who fled from the scene. "I held my right arm and tried to chase them but they ran away. Following that, a fellow commuter took me to the Government Railway Police (GRP) officials after which I was taken to a nearby hospital," he said. After receiving first aid, he was rushed to civic-run Sion Hospital where he was admitted to the trauma ward.
A doctor from the hospital told SUNDAY MiD DAY, "While there was an exit wound on his right forearm, the other bullet got lodged in his right lung as it entered the body a few inches below his shoulder. While his wounds were treated, the bullet lodged in his right lung will be removed using endoscopy once the risk of infection is brought down."u00a0
