Toss N Grill ran out of smoke here. Then, World of Wraps folded up soon after it opened; good riddance too, no filling could redeem those rubbery frozen wraps. The aforesaid spot (behind Cafu00e9 Coffee Day on Carter Road) has now been taken up by multi-cuisine restaurant, Global Village which gets off on the wrong foot.

The interiors at Global Village

Ambience: One week into business, and carpentry was still in full noisy swing at dinner time. Curious passersby who inquired about the fare were told they serve "Indian and Chinese" by the waiters, though the menu clearly had a dozen Southeast Asian and Mexican dishes. There is nothing "global" nor rural about the ambience. The decor screams standard, boring family restaurant from the wooden tables and chairs to the lanterns, lights and cutlery. The cursory Buddha on the inner wall smiles ambiguously at the cardio-aerobics music. Vengaboys were doing the Sha-la-la-la-la when we called for the food.

On the menu: Thankfully, the menu is more extensive than the imagination of the interior designer. Indian, Chinese, Southeast Asian, American and Mexican are on offer. With half the dishes on the menu being unavailable, we started off with a terrible Iced Tea (Rs 75) that tasted like plain sugar water, but the Non-Veg Platter (Rs 445) was value for money. Four pieces each of chicken, mutton and fish kebabs that were largely first-rate. The surprisingly good Burmese Khouswey (Rs 170) could easily feed two hungry gluttons. It was a pity to see the flavours of Korean Pan Roast Chicken (Rs 105) and Babycorn and Paneer in Black Bean Sauce (Rs 173) ruined because of too much salt.

Service: Polite as the waiters were, they had no clue what the items on the menu were about. A young couple on the next table had to pay extra for a portion of rice with their Thai Curry. With recession looming and a jinxed spot for a location, Global Village looks all set to become Clueless Villa.
