Eighteen year-old Shivani Raut was returning from a party with her friends by car, when Rahul Mishra, the inebriated driver, lost control, and smashed into an autorickshaw parked by the side of the road at 2 am on Saturday, outside SNDT Women's College in Santacruz. With Shivani and Rahul, were four more passengers, Amit Gupta, Nimisha Mane, Priyanka Rai and Krishnamani Thavar.u00a0
The occupants of the car and the autorickshaw driver were severely wounded. Mishra, Gupta and Thavar managed to escape with minor injuries, but Raut and the rest were critically injured. She was rushed to Cooper Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Her two friends, Mane and Rai were admitted to the ICU at Cooper Hospital.
Senior police inspector Madhukar Chauduri, said, "The car was travelling at a high speed on Juhu Tara road at 2 am. The driver, Rahul Mishra, was drunk and lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. The car went on to hit a road divider, and finally, an autorickshaw." Mishra was taken into custody. The police have charged Mishra under Sections 279, 338, 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act.
Dr Sulbha Chirmule of Cooper Hospital said, "Out of the people admitted last night, one is still in the ICU."u00a0
Boy killed in Parel
Meanwhile, a cement mixing truck mowed down a five-year boy, who was playing near his home on JR Boricha Marg in Lower Parel on Saturday. The NM Joshi police has arrested the truck driver and an offence has been registered under sections 279 and 304A of the IPC.u00a0
