Denied government compensation, German Bakery owners now plan to rebuild popular joint with borrowings and support of well-wishers
THE owners of German Bakery have been refused compensation by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). Smita Kharose and her family members are now left with no choice but to apply for a loan to rebuild the bakery destroyed in the Valentine's Day eve blast.
The family has hired an architect, who will give them an estimate for rebuilding the bakery. The family will discuss the estimate given by the architect with its chartered accountant before applying for the loan.
The family is yet to come to terms with the fact that it will not get help from the state government. It is still hopeful that it will be able to restore the bakery's old charm soon.
"We have no option left but to apply for a loan. I cannot depend on the government any longer," said Kharose.
Help, please
The Kharoses hope that now that the compensation money has been refused, people will extend their support. Kharose rues the fact that she turned down several people who had come forward to offer financial help.
No encroaching
Now the bakery will be restricted to an area of 250 sq feet and will not have the luxury of the extended space.
"We know the legalities now and have told the architect to design the way the bakery was within the given space," she added.
The debris is still being cleared by workers. The police have already taken away all the necessary evidence and the waiters are now waiting for the owners to start rebuilding the bakery.
Gopal Karkee, manager of the bakery, said, "We are informed that an architect is designing the interiors but apart from that we are not aware when the work is going to start. We can't keep waiting forever."
