The new management of the German Bakery has made it clear that the popular joint destroyed in a blast on Valentine's Day eve last year will reopen only in April, even ruling out the possibility of a soft launch on February 13.

MiD DAY had carried an exclusive report on Wednesday saying the German Bakery owned by Smita Kharose was being taken over by two hoteliers, Vijay Shewale and Rajan Udane. The new management has since confirmed the development.

Speaking to MiD DAY, the hoteliers said they had invested over Rs 1 crore for the reconstruction of German Bakery.

"We are helping the Kharoses in every possible manner and we will support them throughout," said Shewale. "This February 13, there won't be a soft launch, but we are expecting to finish work by April. Only after that will the bakery reopen."

After the report on Udane and Shewale taking over the bakery, Smita Kharose's daughter Snehal had called MiD DAY to say what was said in the report was not true.

"We are already facing problems. What's said in the report is not true," she said.

Vijay Shewale is the brother of Nationalist Congress Party leader and former mayor Suresh Shewale. Udane is a relative of Vijay. Shewale and Udane own about six hotels and restaurants in and around the city, including Hotel Kamini in Chinchwad and Hotel Shreeman in Kothrud.
