Special purpose vehicle to undertake creation of 2 Metro routes

The General Body of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) approved in a meeting yesterday a proposal to establish the Pune Metro Rail Corporation (PMRC) as a special purpose vehicle company.

Earlier, on December 17, the Standing Committee of the civic body had given the green signal for the Metro route from the industrial township of Pimpri-Chinchwad to the Swargate junction in the city.

Yesterday, after the General Body received many supplementary suggestions, it was finally decided to extend the route from Nigdi (beyond Pimpri-Chinchwad) to Bhilarewadi till the Katraj Ghat area (beyond Swargate Junction).

The civic body had previously given the go-ahead for the first Metro route between Vanaz Company on Paud Road and Ramwadi Junction on Ahmadnagar Road.

A letter issued by Municipal Commissioner Mahesh Pathak said PMRC would be the only special purpose vehicle company as per the recommendations made by the DMRC (Delhi Metro Railway Corporation).

The Nigdi to Bhilarewadi route will see the PMC and PCMC sharing part of the cost. "Out of Rs 5,391 crore expenditure estimated for the year 2014, the PMC and PCMC will bear 10 per cent each by spending Rs 415 crore and Rs 124 crore respectively," Assistant Municipal Comm-issioner S V Pavaskar.

"The division has been mentioned in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the purpose. The proposal also gives information on how to use the funding source and recommended actual correspondence with the Centre, state government and the railway authority for using the various tax benefits."
Senior Congress corporator Abhay Chhajed said the Vanaz-Ramwadi route should extend up to the airport.

The proposal was passed in the General Body with the supplementary suggestions given by Arvind Shinde, a former Standing Committee chairman. u00a0
