State gas utility GAIL India Ltd on Wednesday reported a 59 per cent dip in its net profit to Rs 253 crore in the third quarter ending December 31, 2008, on more than doubling of LPG subsidy payouts.
GAIL net profit in the October-December period stood at Rs 253.36 crore as against Rs 621.32 crore a year ago, a company statement said here.
The drop was primarily due to Rs 904.95 crore payout on LPG subsidies. Of this, Rs 646.49 crore was for subsidies for the third quarter and Rs 258.46 crore to cover for short provision in the second quarter.
GAIL along with Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd makes up for roughly one-third of the revenue loss incurred by retailers on fuel sales by way of discounts on LPG and crude oil they sell to Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum.
