According to the police, a shop owner had approached them claiming that a group of eunuchs assaulted and looted him. The gang had arrived in a taxi to his shop in Aaram Nagar, Versova, on Sunday morning. At that time, he was preparing for the inauguration of the shop scheduled later this week and refused to give them money before the opening. He asked them to come back later.
However, the group of five suddenly held him, took his wallet and decamped with Rs 11,000. The complainant then approached the police and registered a case against the gang. "We had received complaints about a gang of eunuchs who have been operating around Andheri Link Road earlier as well," said PSI (detection) Riyazuddin Kazi from the Versova police station.
The five gang-members have been identified as Julie Devendra (52), Kumud Devendra (35), Aruna Chetti (22), Veenu alias Meera (30) and Sudha Devendra (30). The police officers said that their informers had been alerted and sketches were distributed based on the statement of the complainant. On Monday, police officers detained a number of eunuchs from Santacruz, Juhu and Andheri. However, the gang was arrested from Antop Hill following a tip-off.
During investigation, it was revealed that the gang used to loot many autorickshaw commuters during the night in Juhu and Andheri. Last year, a 26-year-old NRI from Dubai was attacked on his way to Andheri from Juhu after a late night party. He stopped the auto he was traveling in as a group of people seemed in considerable distress from a distance. However, the moment the vehicle stopped, a gang of eunuchs threatened him with choppers and knives and decamped with valuables worth Rs 75,000. "We have called the NRI on Wednesday to identify his attackers among those arrested. Currently, the gang is in police custody," said Kazi.
