Mohammad Umar Sheikh (22) who fell to police firing at Azad Maidan during Saturday's mayhem was a resident of Garib Nagar in Bandra (E) and the father of a two-year-old.
He was also an externed criminal and had several cases of rioting, assault and encroachment against him, cops say. The deceased was reportedly given tadipar notice thrice by police - the most recent one came this month.
Sheikh, who was allegedly shot in the neck, was one of two people killed in the violence, the other being a 17-year-old college student. Cops have claimed that the ruckus was pre-planned and many who had gathered at the venue had criminal antecedents.
A police source said Sheikh was notorious in the area and assisted his uncle Salim Sayyed, who operated the local encroachment mafia. Sayyed too has several criminal cases against him. In the most recent one a woman had died of electric shock in May, and Sayyed had been made the accused by the police since he was involved in illegal power tapping in the area.
Sayyed is currently externed after an order by Nirmal Nagar police. He was also arrested by Vakola police in a fake currency case. Around Rs 20 lakh of counterfeit cash was recovered. The other accused in the case were from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.
