The Guide gives you the dope on the 57th Sawai Gandharva music festival

The Sawai Gandharva festival has been around for more than half a century and is organised in memory of the late Sawai Gandharwa, who taught Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Shrikant Deshpande, Executive Secretary of Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal (ASPM), and one of the organisers, has been a disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi and is the grandson of Sawai Gandharva.

"The festival is bigger and better this year and there will be several artistes who will be performing for the first time," states Deshpande. Apart from stalwarts like Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Firoz Dastur and dance exponent Mallika Sarabhai, a new crop of artistes such as vocalist Sanhita Nandi, Harsh Narayan who is the grandson of sarangi player Ram Narayan, sarod player Bishvajit Roy Choudhuri and Chandrashekhar Vaje (disciple ofu00a0 Firoz Dastur) will be performing.

Apart from the song and dance, there will also be an exhibition of rare photographs at the venue. They will also felicitate great artists such as noted vocalist Padma Talwalkar.
