Bangalore's food joints, being raided and closed by the BBMP for poor hygiene, are saying footpath vendors are a bigger health hazard

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is shutting down "unhygienic" hotels, but hotel owners are asking why it is mum about footpath food vendors.

Bangalore has over 5,000 eateries and they are being checked by the health team of BBMP.

Fast to cook, but is it good to eat? Roadside fast food vendors might soon be the next on the list of the BBMP food scanners.

The team is going around checking eateries in Bangalore. The city has about 2,000 wayside food vendors and more than a lakh people eat from them every day.

The BBMP is issuing showcase notices against eateries, but hotel owners say it is doing nothing against the vendors.

The BBMP checks cleanliness, water purity, and quality of food.

Vasudev Adiga, President, Hotel Association of Bangalore, said, "It is a good move and personally I welcome it. But I strongly recommend they stop the footpath vendors."

He said wayside vendors were spreading deadly diseases. A good percentage of Bangalore eateries have good sanitation, he said.

Owners of darshinis are saying they are doing their best to keep their premises clean. Nagaraj, manager of Srinidhi Sagar, near Airport Road, said, "We are cleaning our hotel six times a day."

Chandrashekhar, cashier of Sri Sai Hotel near Leela Palace, said the move of the BBMP was a bit harsh. "We give hot and cold filtered water," he said. Warnings and regular visits are better than closing down eateries, he said.

Ranjan, a software engineer said, "The BBMP should stop foodpath vendors. I know it is their livelihood but others' life is also priceless, and they should maintain hygiene."
