In a bid to provide the much-needed respite to traffic cops in Pune, students from the electronics department of Fergusson College have come up with an idea of creating technical and civic awareness amongst Puneites.

"As there are more two-wheelers in the city than any other part of the state, there is a sheer need of creating awareness about following traffic rules," said Shreya Krishnamurthy.

She along with her batch mates Sneha Krishnan and Esha Biswas made the e-presentation on the basics of traffic signals.

The presentation was based on the basic principles of electronics, which is being used in the automatic traffic signal system.

"We have used transistors as a switch by which the LED (Light Emitting Doid) of the traffic lights Green, Amber and Red glows," she said.

Adding added that in their project, the time sequence is generated using a CMOS 4017 decode counter and a 555 timer.

"The time period for red and green lamp is four times longer than what it is for the yellow lamp and the complete time cycle can be adjusted from seven seconds to 2.5 minutes," Shreya said.

She added that their project operates red, yellow and green LEDs in accurate sequences at a signal junction.

"We would be providing a few more e-solutions for traffic signals and would be making their miniature models to present it before the civic authorities," Shreya said.

As the city has over 15 lakh vehicles on road with numbers increasing every passing day, the electronic solutions would certainly be of help. "As the system gets more complicated with growing vehicular traffic, e-solutions may provide answers to all the problems and complications," believes Shreya.
