Modus operandi
Police officials said Gode was acquainted with the jewellers, with whom he had come in contact during his tenure at a gold testing firm, and was in their good books. They said Gode took the ornaments on the pretext that one of his relatives was getting married and he would try to sell it to the relative.

He promised the jewellers that he would get back the unsold ornaments and the money for the ones sold. Gode took ornaments in small quantity throughout January and February from jewellers Pravin Shah and Karan Lalwani, amounting to Rs 36 lakh and Rs 38 lakh respectively.

Police Inspector Dilip Kulkarni of the L T Marg police station said, "Gode knew the jewellers for the past five years through his previous company, where he used to check gold ornaments. The jewellers trusted him. But since he lost the job, he decided to dupe the jewellers he knew and make quick money. Gode would sell the ornaments through Jain."

Gode and Jain were arrested based on the complaints filed by Shah and Lalwani. They were nabbed from Zaveri Bazaar after the officials received a tip-off about their presence in the area on March 28. The two were booked under Sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), of the Indian Penal Code.u00a0
