WHAT's ON checked out a new Bengali eatery in Kondhwa and felt transported to the bylanes of Kolkata Entrance to Bong Connection. pics/Shree Lahiri
When you hear the name Bong Connection, you start imagining a spread of rice and fresh water fish with generous use of panchphoron spices (mustard, fenugreek, cumin, aniseed, black cumin).
Ambience: Once you enter, you can take a seat on the ground floor near the entrance or move upstairs to the mezzanine level overlooking the road. The du00e9cor is minimal with subtle Bengali touches. Pictures of goddess Kali and Sri Ramkrishna adorn the walls.
We tried: Egg Chops (Rs 22) and Radha Ballabi (a type of Puri) with Alu Dum (Rs 45) were delicious and satiating. The Surmai Fry (Rs 107) was crispy while the Prawn Malai Curry (Rs 125) with steamed rice had a perfect blend of spices that left us craving for more. We loved the Shukto (Rs 62), which is a vegetable curry with bittergourd , potatoes, French beans, brinjals and drumsticks cooked with panchphoron and milk. A fitting finale to a typical Bengali meal would have been Mishti Doi or the traditional Sandesh, but they don't serve any.

Instead, we had to settle for the Tomato Chutney (Rs 25).
Range: Their menu card is replete with a variety of fish recipes which include Rohu, Katla, Hilsa, prawns, Surmai and Pabda fishes. There are Bengali specialities like Chicken Rezala (Rs 88), Chicken Kasha (Rs 88), Mutton Kosha (Rs 107) and Mutton Rezala (Rs 107) for meat-lovers. If you are a vegetarian, try their inimitable Alu Posto (Rs 62), Dhokar Dalna (Rs 62), and Echorer Dalna (Rs 62).
Service: The service was impeccable. The attendants serve you with a smile and are at your beck and call at a single glance.
