In February, Iqbal Kaskar, brother of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim, was granted bail in connection with an extortion case, which had been registered with the J J Marg police station.
The police have now written to ACP Rajendra Chavan from the Colaba division, seeking preventive action against Kaskar. After receiving a show-cause notice, Kaskar had presented himself at ACP Rajendra Chavan's office along with his advocate Shyam Keswani on June 9, and a vakalatnama presenting the lawyer was filed.
Speaking to mid-day, Keswani said, "These are all false allegations. No chargesheet has been filed. How can they level such allegations on my client? We are going to cross-examine the witnesses on the next date, that is, June 23."
Senior Police Inspector Anil Madvi from the J J Marg police also confirmed writing to the ACP to take preventive action against the accused, so that Kaskar does not commit a similar crime again.
Once the police write to an ACP, the senior police officer can perform the role of a Special Executive Magistrate, and begin with the chapter proceedings. ACP Chavan confirmed that chapter proceedings would be initiated against Kaskar.
