A cop from Jogeshwari Police posed as a daily wage labourer to nab an alleged conman, who had cheated a woman of Rs 30 lakh, on the pretext of giving her an affordable MHADA flat.
The case dates back to 2013, when Smruti Daware, 41, resident of Malvani, was introduced to accused, Vivek Kadam. Kadam had assured to help her buy a MHADA flat and had taken Rs 30 lakh in advance. He also promised to give her the allotment letter for a flat in Chikuwadi, Borivli.

After years of dilly-dallying on the flat, Kadam suddenly went incommunicado last year. "Realising she had been conned, Daware filed a complaint with the police in October last year," said an officer with the Jogeshwari police station.
"After going through his call record details, we learnt that Kadam was constantly in touch with another accused, Rajesh Chavhan, 48. We kept a close eye on Chavhan, and found that he would meet Arvind Sharma, a lassiwala from Malad, very often," said the officer.
The police detained the lassiwala, who agreed to help them. He called Chavhan and told him that his cousin, a daily wage labourer, needed a room in Powai and could pay an advance of R2.5 lakh. Chavhan fell for the trap and asked Sharma to bring his cousin to a flat in Malad West for the formalities. On February 20, Anil Hadal, police sub-inspector, posed as Sharma's cousin and went to meet the duo. "Kadam told the PSI that he would give him a flat in Sangharsh Nagar, Powai, for R5 lakh, and asked him to pay the advance. When PSI handed over the money to Kadam and Chavhan, the team of cops nabbed both of them red-handed," said a police officer.
"Kadam, his wife Vedika Kadam, and Chavhan have been arrested under the IPC for cheating and forgery," said a senior police official.
