Saying the laws for repair of heritage structures are not people-friendly, MPs criticised the heritage list at a meeting with the CM

After Shiv Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray slammed the heritage list by the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee (MHCC), Congress MPs and MLAs cried foul over the same.

During a meeting with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, MPs and MLAs from North Central Mumbai slammed the heritage list.

Congress MP Priya Dutt, along with MLAs Baba Siddique and Krishna Hegde were present at the meeting. Also present were Shama Kulkarni representing AGNI (Action for Good Governance, Networking in India), the secretary of Salsette societies Cornell Gonsalves, Father Vernen Aguair, Father Jude Fernandes, corporators Asif Zakaria and Karen D'Mello.

Opposing the list, Bandra MLA Siddique said that several Mumbaikars would face problems if their properties were included in the heritage list as they would not be able to carry out repairs to their old houses.

Arguing against the inclusion of properties, Siddique said that the archaic laws were not people-friendly and only encouraged corruption in the administration. He added that the state also needed to redefine the definition of a ‘gaothan' for the sake of redevelopment.

As many as 25 plots from Bandra and Juhu are included in the list, which are currently undergoing redevelopment and the list also includes a few school plots.

Chavan admitted that the exercise had not been successful and that he would oversee the list and the structures and then make a final decision. u00a0
