Centre funding project to expand water supply to Pune

The Central Government has approved funding for the 42-km underground water pipeline from Bhama-Askhed dam to the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) on Tuesday. The decision took place at a meeting held in Delhi. It will help to get additional two TMC water for the city.

Recently, the state government approved the plan and the proposal was forwarded to the Centre for its approval along with funding for the expansion of Wadgaon Water Refilling Centre, also approved in the meeting. VG Kulkarni, head of the PMC's water supply department, was present at the meeting. "After the expansion of the Wadgaon water refilling centre it will have the capacity of 250 MLD water. The project was prepared by General Body (GB)," said Kulkarni.

Both projects cost around Rs 510 crore. The central government will fund 50 per cent, the state government 30 per cent and PMC will spend 20 per cent on the project.

Bhama Askhed dam is located at Rajgurunagar of Pune district. It will supply 2.6 thousand million cubic (TMC) feet water to Kalas, Vishrantwadi, Dhanori, Vidhyanagar, Kharadi and Vadgaonsheri areas.

After the execution of the project, 200 million litres per day (MLD) of water will be supplied to around 25 wards in Kharadi and Pune-Ahmednagar Road areas. The water needs of around 10 lakh population in the area starting from Holkar Bridge will be met by this project.

JNNURM is funding 11 development projects in the city worth ocer Rs 1,800 crore. u00a0
