Awareness and precautions must for prevention

Five per cent of Indians are affected by AIDS, but about 30 per cent are suffering from diabetes. "Most people in India take diabetes very casually. However, research says there is a huge growth in the number of diabetes patients in India. Nowadays, unhealthy lifestyles are leading to diabetes in school children and pregnant women.
It proves how ignorant we are about the disease," said Dr Anil Kapoor, Managing Director, World Diabetes Foundation.

The non-profit foundation is working on spreading awareness about diabetes. It has 243 projects in 93 countries all over the world and 40 of its projects are in India.

"Our aim is to educate people to prevent diabetes. But those suffering from the disease can lead a normal life too. The cost of teaching a person about diabetes is hardly 3 dollars but the treatment costs much more.

If ignored at an initial stage, later the patient might suffer from ulcers and in the worst case it may lead to eyesight problems and gangrene. The treatment might cost around 400 dollars. Thus awareness and prevention would save you from making a hole in your pocket," Dr Kapoor added.

Most people are unaware of the fact that diabetes can even cause blindness in extreme cases. In recent years it has been found that some pregnant ladies have diabetes and it was transmitted to their babies.

"Some pregnant ladies develop symptoms of diabetes for a small term but if the disease didn't heal properly then it could be dangerous for the baby," Dr Kapoor added.
