New Delhi: Hours after the BJP lost miserably in the Bihar Assembly polls, union minister Prakash Javadekar tried to save face by saying that the "BJP lost only because of alliance arithmetic." BJP vice president Prabhat Jha added, "We failed to understand people's mind. We will have to change our election strategy." Party's senior leader in Bihar Azfar Shamshi said the verdict was not a referendum on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The loss in any way is not a referendum on our PM. It's a collective loss of our party workers. We will analyse what went wrong and will come back strongly," he said. "We will play a role of constructive opposition. The victory of the Grand Alliance proves that they succeeded in playing the caste card well," Shamshi said.
Meanwhile, BJP president Amit Shah said his party respects the people's mandate in Bihar and congratulated Nitish Kumar for winning the assembly polls. "I congratulate Nitish Kumar and (Rashtriya Janata Dal chief) Lalu Prasad Yadav on their win. We respect the mandate of people of Bihar. Good wishes to the new government, hope they take Bihar much ahead in terms of development," Shah tweeted.
