The Social Welfare Department and Central Relief Committee's (CRC) ongoing month-long initiative aimed at eradicating beggar menace in the city has received a jolt as not one of the three telephone numbers (23486626, 23434648 and 23481580) of the Centre are working since au00a0 cable was damaged in the area six days ago.

The beggar helpline is expected to start functioning in a day or two.

Lakshminarasaiah, the superintendent of Central Relief Committee, said, "We used to get around 50 calls a day on the numbers. Our secretary, Krishne Gowda, has given a written complaint to the BSNL. The officials have agreed to give us wireless phones till the lines are restored."

"The BSNL officials have promised that our centre lines will be ready in a day or two. Land- lines of the whole area have gone dead due to some cable fault," said Manje Gowda, the CRC president.
