Shambhulinge Gowda (49), who follows Gandhian principles and is contesting BBMP, is popularly known as Bapu, and is the poorest candidate contesting the elections.

He has has no movable or immovable assets. However, Gowda says he is determined to give a tough fight to candidates who are flush with funds.

Dhoti characterGowda, who has filed his nomination from Bagalkunte, has been wearing just a khadi dhoti for about a decade now and dispenses ayurvedic medicine to earn a living.
"I have filed my nomination and have even started my election campaign. I campaign for over 15 hours a day on my bicycle and hopeu00a0 to make it to the council this time," he said.

Talking about his campaign, Gowda said, "As I don't believe in bribing, I don't even offer tea to the voters. I have decided that I will not spend more than Rs 10 a day."
Raghav B, au00a0 resident of Bagalkunte, said, "Gowda is different from others. Though we are not sure that he'll win, I wish more more people would vote for such a modest man."

shambhulinge Gowda is contesting the BBMP elections for the first time. Earlier, he had fought two Assembly elections from Maddur and T Dasaralli constituencies. He had also contested the Parliamentary election from Mandya and the 2009 by-polls from Govindrajajnagar. |
