Banned by his community for organising his friend's inter-caste marriage, a businessman from Pune allegedly committed suicide on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Arun Kisan Naikunji. Arun's friend Dhiraj Ashok Pangudwale was in love a girl from another community. "Around 5 years back, Arun and his friends helped Dhiraj in his marriage. Two years back, the Gawli community, to which Arun belongs, held a meeting and declared Arun, his brother and friend Dhiraj as outcasts," Assistant police inspector Rajendra Magar of Chandannagar police station informed.
Following the declaration, Arun was forced to vacate his house in Gawli Adda in camp area, where all Gawli community people stay and provide cow and buffalo milk in the vicinity. He later started living in Wadgaon Sheri. Afterwards, he was even banned from visiting the community events. "On Sunday, he had left to meet community heads to confess his âoffence' and request them to take him back in the community. But, they were delaying the procedure for last one-and-a-half-year," Magar added.
"Finally, gaining no response from them and was unable to bear such social stigma, he ended his life in the wee hours of Monday," the cop concluded.
The police have filed an abetment to suicide case against the Gawli community. At present, the case has been registered with Chandannagar police station, which falls under the jurisdiction of Pune city police.
