The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has complained to election authority about fake news claiming that Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar will return back to Central Ministry if he loses Goa by-elections. The complaint has been filed against violation of code of conduct by circulating distorted and false news item.

The party alleged that by circulating distorted and false news item on social media, an attempt has been made to create falsehood and malign the image of Parrikar, adding that it is an attempt to misguide the electorate of the Panaji constituency from where Goa Chief Minister is contesting the by-polls.

The BJP also requested the election authority to take immediate and swift action against the perpetrators of such false propaganda and ensure that free and fair elections are held. A media report under the name of Prime News, Goa claimed that Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had said that he will go back to Delhi as Defence Minister if he loses the by-election.

'These elections are important for me, but if I lose, I can always shift to Delhi as Defence Minister,' the report quoted Parrikar as saying. Parrikar had resigned as the defence minister and sworn-in as the Goa Chief Minister on March 14 this year. With Parrikar becoming the Chief Minister, he has to get elected to the Assembly within six months of taking oath.

The by-election in Panaji and Valpoi constituencies would be held on August 23. Parrikar is contesting the Panaji Assembly by-election against Girish Chodankar of the Congress and Anand Shirodkar of Goa Suraksha Manch.
