In a major blow to Hyderabad-based leader Asaduddin Owaisi, his party All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has been derecognised as a political party in Maharashtra.
It can no longer contest civic body elections in Mumbai. The decision also means that AIMIM cannot contest local body elections in Maharashtra, including panchayat and civic body polls.
Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are underway next year and it was the party had planned to expand it's base in Maharashtra after the success of 2014 assembly elections.
According to Maharashtra's election commission, the AIMIM did not submit relevant documents for its registration and hence the step was taken.
Besides AIMIM, 191 other political parties have also been derecognised.
