Indore: Five policemen were injured when around 100 army men allegedly vandalised a police station in the city early on Thursday morning and manhandled the staff, including a woman officer.
The incident took place at Vijay Nagar police station, where the army personnel also allegedly snatched away a service rifle of a policeman and damaged vehicles parked on the premises.
According to sources, the incident could be a fallout of an altercation between a police patrol team and some army jawans that took place late last night near a bar in Vijay Nagar locality.
"The army personnel came on motorbikes and in four wheelers from Mhow Cantonment area (around 25 kms from the district) and stormed into Vijay Nagar police station around 5 am. They entered different rooms of the police station and destroyed windowpanes, computers and other material," City (east) Superintendent of Police (SP) O P Tripathi said.
"The army men allegedly indulged in violence that left five policemen injured, who were administered first aid. They allegedly also misbehaved with a lady sub-inspector and manhandled her," the SP added.
They broke the glass panes of the vehicles parked on the police station campus and took away a service rifle of a
policeman, Tripathi said.
According to the officer three cases have been registered against unidentified army personnel for indulging in violence, misbehaving with lady SI and ransacking the police station. "The three cases are being investigated and some video footage linked to the incident is also being viewed," Tripathi said.
A few hours after the incident, two army officers from Mhow came down to Vijay Nagar police station and sought information about the incident, he said, adding, "They took some pictures of the police station and talked to policemen, who were witness to the violence."
