Police fired at farmers in Bellary on Sunday when they protested against the acquisition of agricultural land to build an airport in Bellary.

The farmers say they would lose their livelihood if their land was acquired for the airport. The farmers turned violent and pelted stones at the police damaging a few police vehicles.

The police then fired in the air and used lathisu00a0and tear gas shells. Some farmers were arrested.
Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa alleged that Congress was behind the Bellary incident. "It is a conspiracy of the Congress to tarnish the BJP's government's image," he said.
